{"id":3711,"date":"2014-07-29T21:32:18","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T03:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nachzen.net\/?p=3711"},"modified":"2014-07-29T21:32:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T03:32:38","slug":"trip-to-oshkosh-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/?p=3711","title":{"rendered":"Trip to Oshkosh &#8211; Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, July 27, 2014<\/p>\n<p>It rained all night.\u00a0 The weather when we woke up was overcast and very soggy.\u00a0 Uncle Stacy said he\u2019d take the car back to the FBO and see what he could find out.\u00a0 Berck and I went back to sleep and slept until housekeeping knocked on our door at 10 a.m.\u00a0 Uncle Stacy called from the FBO and said that they\u2019d said he could take the car back out again, provided we could bring it straight back if they needed it.\u00a0 He returned to the hotel and picked us up, and we went to Cackleberry\u2019s for a decent breakfast\/lunch.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to return to the FBO, since that was as comfortable place to hang out as any. \u00a0Berck and Uncle Stacy ensconced themselves in front of the weather computer at the FBO and just stared at the screen. \u00a0Finally, in the afternoon, it looked like we&#8217;d be able to thread our way through a line of thunderstorms to clear weather on the other side. \u00a0Then we&#8217;d be able to make it to Peoria and maybe even Rockford. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/flightaware.com\/live\/flight\/N5301L\/history\/20140727\/1930Z\/KHUF\/KRFD\">Flight Aware shows our track.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berck shepherded the plane between two thunderstorms and along among\u00a0the clouds, and then the weather cleared and we were able to to fly straight to Schaumburg. \u00a0Flying into Chicago airspace is tricky in a general aviation plane because you have to keep nice and low so the jets landing at O&#8217;Hare don&#8217;t crash into you. \u00a0Unfortunately, there are also towers on the approach to Schaumburg \u00a0that are higher than the altitude you&#8217;re flying . \u00a0There was a tense period when we knew were flying right at three huge towers but couldn&#8217;t find them on the sectional map. \u00a0At last we spotted the first one and navigated to the west of it. \u00a0Now the problem was finding the runway. \u00a0Because we were so low, we couldn&#8217;t see much of anything, much less a runway. \u00a0To make matters worse, the runway was perpendicular to us and was behind buildings and tall trees. \u00a0Berck spotted some hangers and decided the runway must be next to them, so we flew in that direction. \u00a0Berck yelled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y6bekyOx22Q\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a freaking water tower at the end of the runway!&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be continued&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, July 27, 2014 It rained all night.\u00a0 The weather when we woke up was overcast and very soggy.\u00a0 Uncle Stacy said he\u2019d take the car back to the FBO and see what he could find out.\u00a0 Berck and I went back to sleep and slept until housekeeping knocked on our door at 10 a.m.\u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3711","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-flying","category-wanderings"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3711","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3711"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3711\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3715,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3711\/revisions\/3715"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3711"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3711"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nachzen.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3711"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
