Nachzen.net was unavailable last night because I’m silly. It turns out that amusing things happens when you build a DNS server and DHCP server on different boxes, and then list the hostnames in the DHCP server table. It turns out that the DHCP server won’t start until it can resolve the hostnames, which will never happen when the DNS server is busy asking the DHCP server what it’s IP address is.
The amusing thing is, it’s been set up this way for a very long time, but I’ve never turned both machines off and back on at the same time. As long as the other one was already up, things were good. I turned them off last night to service a UPS that was complaining about its battery.
