It’s been snowing all day.

Berck took the following picture this morning. It’s since snowed about six inches, and it’s still coming down.

We cracked open tonight the bottle of Glögg Berck got at Ikea last year. Of course, we had to buy some aquavit to mix in it. Berck mixed the 500 ml bottle with half as much aquavit and that much cheap, red wine. He also cut up one of Ian’s oranges in the pot and heated it all up. Mmmm… a perfect warm drink for a very wintery day.

So what do we do when it snows here? Why, put on the snow tires, of course. Then Berck had to test them out, which we did on Gold Camp Road (a mountainous, narrow, dirt road with tunnels that goes all the way to Victor). The Miata doesn’t have much ground clearance and normally doesn’t like bumpy dirt roads, but when a road is covered with snow, the white stuff apparently fills in all the holes, and the Miata drives along on top just fine.

We drove until we came to a group of cars blocking the road, whether because they were trying to extricate one of the SUV’s or were too busy having fun to get out our way. Berck slid around backwards, and we headed back down the road. The most terrifying part of the day was avoiding people trying to drive without snow tires to the mall. There were fender-benders with police on the sides of roads everywhere. Good enough reason to stay inside on a wintery day.

Berck is trying to get his computer to work, otherwise there would be more pictures up.

Wish List — by popular demand

We each have Amazon wish lists, so check those out.

For Joanna:

Some men’s Levis 501s jeans size 34×30 (Used is fine.)

A Bundt pan

A springform pan

For Berck:

Some flannel shirts, XX-Large Tall (Berck likes L.L. Bean’s chamoise cloth shirts best but also realizes that they’re quite expensive.)

He could always use some more SmartWool socks.

For both:

Pillows! (Pacific Coast?)

Queen-sized, 100% cotton, at least 200 thread-count, NON-sateen sheets (Berck likes dark blue.)

A griddle would be nice (Though that griddle may be a little much.)

Amazingly, our Amazon wedding registry is still active. As they are at Sears and Cooking.com (Berck is especially keen about knives).

Gingersnaps saved my life.

On Sunday, Berck took Nathan and me flying. We did stalls and negative G’s and all sorts of manner of stuff that made me throw up.

Nathan enjoyed flying so much that he wanted to go again today. I wasn’t sure I should tag along again in the back seat. But Max’s advice is to eat a box of gingersnaps while you’re flying, and never try to conquer air sickness with an empty stomach. He should know; he flies KC-135’s.

So this morning I ate a full breakfast (pumpkin pie and eggnog–hey, it goes down smooth … shouldn’t it come back up the same way?), and we stopped by the store to buy a box of gingersnaps and a bottle of gingerale.

Nathan and Berck had decided to get their first “hundred-dollar hamburger” by heading down to Pueblo. This was Berck’s first cross-country flight for fun. We stuck with straight and level flight the whole time down. I munched on gingersnaps the whole time.

Berck demonstrated a beautiful short approach landing in front of another plane that was coming in (apparently, I was the only person who could spot the traffic from way far out … thanks to my laser vision). Cessnas fall out of the sky amazingly well. We parked where we were told to and headed into the terminal.

Three tasty burgers (and some onion rings) later, we climbed back into the plane flew back home. I munched on more gingersnaps and continued to feel just fine. Berck asked Nathan if it were time to make me sick and pitched the nose high up into the sky. Soon we were free falling, and everything in the back seat pockets (window cleaner bottle, check list, fuel testers) flew up onto the ceiling and then into the front seat. Berck’s pen came out of his pocket and hovered in front of him; he used it as a plumb to see how much to push to keep us at 0 G’s.

But that was enough excitement, and Berck let Nathan fly most of the rest of the way home. He even made the approach, all the way up to actually landing.

And I was just fine. I still have half a box of gingersnaps left.

Now Nathan wants to go flying again on Sunday.

There are pictures up in the gallery.

the prodigal camera

We all went up to the wood lot today. Berck got bored because he didn’t have a chainsaw to play with (like Nathan and Max did). Although, if he had, he probably would have cut off a leg.

I blazed a trail for the three-wheeler to haul brush up (on an old car hood) while Max and Nathan cut up a 70-year-old pine tree. Under the brush by the tree, Nathan found our digital camera! It wasn’t in its leather case anymore, and the little rubber strip to pull the battery out was all chewed up. We think a mouse or a squirrel probably shredded the case for nesting.

I was advised not to try to turn it on until it had a chance to dry out. But when I brought it home to Berck (who cooked us all a delectable dinner), he turned it on just fine.

It works! Our camera is back!
