Rye Grass Smiley

My senior year at the University of Mobile, I schemed a plot and persuaded my buddy Cris to help me carry it out. I spent the night at her dorm room, and we got up very early and donned all black clothes. Unfortunately, we hadn’t set our alarm early enough, because it was already light by the time we got up. We were the only people up and about, except for the security guard patrolling in her little car. Unfortunately, this made us stick out. Fortunately, security at UM has never cared about much of anything.

We went out to the quad in the middle of the university. Cris stood in the center, while I played out several feet of twine. Then I walked in a circle as far as the twine would let me, holding a plastic bag of rye grass seed in one hand and sowing about a foot wide swath with the other. Next I shortened the string and made another arc of seed. Then we eyeballed a couple of dots. When the security car would drive by, we would drop the twine and act like we were chatting.

When we returned from winter break, we admired our handiwork from the third floor of Weaver Hall:

I think groundskeeping had tried to blur it by planting more rye seed around it, but our face definitely had the taller grass.

(Cris and I were senior class president and vice-president at the time.)

50 Cakes Update

Last Christmastime, Amanda made a chocolate, coffee, peanut butter cheesecake; I can’t remember what we decided to call it exactly. She also made two mini cakes for Berck and me, so that counts as two cakes.

She made Irish car-bomb cupcakes this last visit, but they actually involved Scottish and Mexican heritage, so I’m not sure what that makes them. All I know is that they were (and are…we haven’t finished them yet) delicious. That counts as cake number 5. 45 to go.

1st day of training for new position

Well, today was my first day of training for my new position. We went through all the open cases and discussed what stage they are in. I answered the phone a few times and was able to help one guy with answering his interrogatories presented by Respondents. I’ve pretty much done everything that I need to know how to do before once or twice, so we’re feeling confident that I’ll be just fine. We’re going to set a hearing date tomorrow, which I haven’t done here but have done at my previous job. Then we ran out of things for me to learn, so I went back and played with my files some more.

I have now been here a year. Tomorrow will by my first anniversary!

So lots of big news today…

A company here in Colorado Springs has bought the company my dad works for, and today he accepted the new company’s offer to work for them…here! So he and mom are coming out here mid July to look for a house. Of course, they now have TWO houses to sell because they bought Nathan and Stephanie’s when they moved to Seattle. So we’ll have to see what happens.

The other big news is that my boss walked into my cubby today and said that the girl that had been hired right before me had just given her two week notice so she can go back to school. Fortunately, I’ve done almost everything she’s done so far except answer the phones, so it will be pretty easy to move from my hole in my rubber room to the front office area. I’ve really enjoyed my job so far of organizing files, and my new job as one of the regular paralegals will be far more stressful. But it’s kind of a promotion. And as long as I don’t majorly screw up, it’s good job security. We’re going to see how it goes on if we need to hire a new person. I will be doing all of Steven’s dictation (there’s quite a lot) and be the paralegal for one full-time attorney and one part-time one, plus helping Steven’s paralegal with his busy work. It’s actually the job I initially applied for. Fortunately, I’m at a good stopping point with my file organization. The office manager doesn’t want to stop that process, but I don’t see how I’ll have time to do much of that with everything else I’ll be doing. Overall, it’s a good change, though, I think.

Here’s to new beginnings!
