Barnes & Noble

I made a quick trip to Barnes & Noble this evening after work to pick up a book.  I was hoping it would be quick, but they’re repaving almost the entire parking lot, so it’s nearly impossible to get to.  I eventually found a spot in the back and weaved my way through the maze of yellow tape and traffic barrels up to the front door.  Guys in hardhats operating heavy equipment were working out on the fresh pavement.  The acrid smell of asphalt was in the air.

All Barnes & Nobles are apparently identical all over the country.  They all have the double doors that open to a foyer.  I passed through the first set and was faced with the heavy wooden doors that open into the store.  The smell of asphalt was replaced with the scent of coffee.

And I was transported.  Back 20 years, half my lifetime.  The same doors, the same aroma. Beyond those doors I would find laughter, conversation, friendship, and love. All I had to do was open the doors.  I paused.

Not all Barnes & Nobles are identical.

Perfect Street Scene

We’re watching the first episode of Garfunkel and Oates tonight (“The Fade Away”), and Berck pauses the show and backs it up and says, “Is that where I think it is?” It shows this street scene in Old Colorado City on Colorado Avenue at 26th Street (accross the street from Old Colorado City Creamery to the west and Pizzeria Rustica to the south):  https://www.google.com/maps/@38.8481307,-104.8641604,3a,75y,91.35h,81.57t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s_gVUFngy3nnM0hcF2It1bw!2e0

The show takes place in Hollywood.  Apparently, Fred Savage thought Old Colorado City was a perfect street view.  (Well, it is.)

New Bike

Berck got a new job.  He started Monday and didn’t do much this week, so he doesn’t know yet if he likes it or not.  It does pay more money though, so, of course, he had to buy a new motorcycle.

It’s a brand new 2014 red Honda CB1100.  It’s meant to look like a Honda from 40 years ago but with modern conveniences like fuel injection and anti-lock brakes.  We picked it up yesterday after work.

The Avengers, Jonah’s perspective

Berck rented The Avengers because Joss Whedon directed it. But he doesn’t do comic books.

“When do we see Natalie?”

“What is this guy’s deal? Does all he have is a shield?”

“IS THAT ROBIN?”

“Every time he says anything, all I hear is, ‘Quarter pounder with cheese.'”

“There’s Natalie! Natalie is on the computer screen!”

“Not every woman can pull off wearing a suit like that.”

“Have you noticed that Scarlett and Robin’s suits keep getting unzipped lower?”

“Where’s Natalie?”

“I don’t understand. I thought these were comic book characters. Why is there suddenly a Norse god?”

“This guy has to weld his own suit? You mean he’s just a regular guy with a suit?”

“I’m not sure Scarlett’s suit can unzip any lower.”
