Eli Bremer on a National Geographic Channel Special

Eli is on The Incredible Human Machine on Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel. Among other things, the program will “study top-notch individuals who have harnessed the power of their body through rigorous training, including U.S. Olympic pentathlete Eli Bremer, who trains at more than 6,000 feet above sea level…” It looks really cool. I don’t have the National Geographic Channel (or a TV for that matter), but maybe I’ll get to watch it on video sometime.

(Fake) French Bread Recipe

2 cups water heated so it feels warm but not uncomfortably hot
1 package or 2 to 3 teaspoons yeast
a little bit of sugar or flour to proof the yeast
1 TABLESPOON of salt after yeast has begun proofing
5 to 6 cups flour (I like King Arthur Bread Flour best) or however much the dough will take until it stops being sticky

Put in a greased bowl, turn over, cover, and let rise about an hour. Punch down, kneed, and shape into two long loaves. Place on a cookie sheet generously sprinkled with cornmeal. Make slices about half an inch deep crosswise along the loaves so they won’t break their own cracks. Cover and let rise again at least an hour. Place in an oven preheated to 400 degrees and bake for 35 minutes.

For a crispy crust, brush with egg before baking. For a softer crust, brush with butter when you take it out of the oven.

You can use about half whole wheat flour, and it will still work. But it won’t be (fake) French bread anymore.

Oh, by the way, this bread is terrible the next day (though, you can toast it fine and it makes lovely French toast).

New Bumper

camera phone image

Berck just sent me a picture from his phone. After seeing his picture from Colorado National Monument, I’m wishing I could join him. I guess camera phones are good for something.

Berck is in Grand Junction for the weekend to attend the Flyin’ Miata Open House and track day. He hadn’t been planning on going, but he melted off his bumper when his exhaust pipe rusted through. It seemed to be better value to pay to go to Flyin’ Miata’s track day and drive out to the other side of the state than to pay for shipping.

Berck wanted me to go with him, but that meant I would have had to take two days off of work, and I’m supposed to be feeding the horses with Duncan and Michele out of town. Berck just called me and tried to convince me to drive out to join him after work on Friday. “The tent is already set up. It’ll be just like a hotel. All you have to do is check in. Well, and bring your sleeping bag.” He also tried to lure me with the promise of a peach festival. “It’s your kind of thing!”

But I’ve been running straight for several weeks now. I’ve only had one weekend to relax the last month, and I spent the whole time worrying about jury duty (which I need to remember to find out about Friday at 5 pm). I just need a day or so to do nothing and relax. I’ve also been looking forward to having some time to myself since I convinced Berck to go to Grand Junction.

Sure is pretty out there, though…
