Stupid Wind

I got up at 6:30 this morning, packed a lunch, checked the weather and went to the flight school. I left my lunch. I got to the flight school at about 7:35. When no one was there to even let me in the building by 8:30am, I called my instructor. Who was asleep. And didn’t even apologize. I’m really starting not to like him.

I called the weather briefer. Who told me that the surface winds at Dalhart, TX were predicted to be 25-35 knots about the time I’d arrive. Flight school says I can’t fly if surface winds are over 25 knots. Besides, I’ve never landed with 35 knot gusts, and this probably isn’t the time to try.

I was going to try to do it in the middle of the week, but I’m leaving for Delaware on Tuesday, and when I come back on Thursday, Mom will be here. I don’t want to spend a whole day flying when she’s here to visit, so I’m tentatively on the schedule for Monday the 20th.

I wanted to be done with this. I’m tired of worrying about it.

Librarying

Berck is checking the weather page for the 17th time today. Supposedly, he’ll be flying his long cross country flight tomorrow, finally. The weather looks clear…just windy.

We got library cards today! They gave us them with only a utility bill to prove we weren’t out to steal books. Then we browsed the Norman Public Library and found that there were few books we’d want to steal. I’m in the middle of two books right now, so I didn’t check out anything, but Berck got a Michael Chabon novel. They didn’t have any audio books that looked interesting. Ah, the joys of a small town library. I wonder if I could get an OKC card and if there’s a branch near my work.

When we got back we took a little picnic lunch over to the private lake in the subdivision across the street from us. I don’t think we’re allowed, but who is going to stop us. It’s a beautiful day, crystal clear and just the right temperature. Hopefully, the weather will be as good tomorrow for Berck’s flight.

Solstice Wishlist

In case anyone is wondering what we’d like for the “Winter Holidays,” here’s a little list of things we could use.

Our wedding registries should have some stuff left over.

We also each have Amazon wishlists.

For both ofus:

The Stone Edition of the Tanach

A Saladmaster Food Processor–there are several available on E-Bay

A bread knife

A pastry cutter (with blades, not wires…here’s a good example)

Cooling racks

A bottom pouring fat separator–you know, one like this (Berck has been using a plastic bottle with a hole punched in the bottom.)

We could also use a generic 12 inch pan lid (like that will fit over our cast iron frying pan or a wok).

For Joanna:

Some BDU pants, size Large-Regular or inseam 29 1/2 to 32 in., waist 35 to 39. I think I can wear the next size down as well. I prefer solid black or blue, but any color or design would be fine.

Men’s jeans size 34×30 (For some reason men’s jeans of that size just fit, while women’s jeans I have to try on.)

Also, if I had a bike, I could go bicycling with Berck.

For Berck:

Yet more books

Berck also wants BDU pants, X-Large-Regular, inseam 29-32 1/2, waist 39 to 43, but they HAVE to be ripstop (you can tell because the fabricmakes little squares). He doesn’t particularly want camo colored. Solid colors are fine.

Some flannel shirts, XX-Large Tall (Berck likes L.L. Bean’s chamoise cloth shirts best but also realizes that they’re quite expensive.)

We’ll repost this if we think of other things.

Being There

Berck was dismayed to find that my family doesn’t serve mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving. Instead we have sauerkraut. Yum!

We had two turkeys–Nathan spent all day smoking them. Berck had asked if he could make his mom’s famous refigerator rolls, but somehow all the necessary ingredients showed up except yeast. Dad and my Uncle Dave went into town to see if anything was open and returned triumphant. “I hope we got the right kind,” Dad said. Berck was pleased; they had brought back Active Dry instead of Rapid Rise, like I always seem to do. “They had two kinds,” Dad continued, “All Natural and Extra Protein.”

The yeast delay meant the roll dough didn’t rise enough in time for dinner. But they’re refrigerator rolls! The dough was stuck in the fridge, and we enjoyed them the next night.

We had Mom’s famous dressing, green beans, and asparagus. For dessert Berck was dismayed no chocolate was served. Instead we had caramel cake, my famous pecan pie, and Steph’s famous pumpkin pie.

On Friday, Nathan, Stephanie, Ian, Kimber, Berck, and I hiked up to one of my favorite spots around Highlands: Devil’s Courthouse. At the top we enjoyed a picnic lunch lugged up by Steph. Nate had lugged up Ian. Kimber had lugged up Berck. After working up a sweat climbing to the top, Berck asked, “Wouldn’t you love a cold beer just now?”

“Yeah!”

Berck reached into my backpack and pulled out two bottles of Shiner.

The three couples played Cranium that night. Dad doesn’t like board games, but he really seemed to enjoy Cranium. Berck and I kicked butt, as usual.

The next day, Berck and I slept in till noon and then spent the rest of the day cooking. I baked bread, and Berck made all-day bolognese sauce, roasted rosemary potatoes, and emptied most of the remaining contents of the refrigerator into a killer salad. We played more Cranium with Ben replacing Dad, who ran out of steam and headed to bed. And we kept awaking Ian with our laughter. Berck and I won again. Of course.

Ian is crawling! He just started a couple of weeks ago, and he’s not quite got it all down yet. He thrashes his arms and legs and somehow propels his body in a soldier-crawl across the floor. Nathan will toss a toy across the carpet and say, “Go get it!” Ian will gaze at the toy longingly and then start flailing elbows and knees until he gets to his destination. Then he does a little victory “swim,” joyfully swinging all appendages at once in celebration of accomplishing his goal.

Ian can’t sit up by himself, but if you put him in a sitting position, he can stay sitting as long as he likes. He sat with Berck on the couch for a half hour straight, the two of them playing with Berck’s watch. It makes a cool clinking sound when you squeeze the links together.

We were the last to leave with Mom and Dad on Sunday afternoon. The car’s transmission starting acting bad as we drove down to Atlanta, so Mom and Dad spent the night in Columbus after dropping us off at the airport. Then they left the car there to get fixed by the folks who repaired the transmission a month ago.

We had no problems getting back to Oklahoma. I just had to get up half dead at six after getting in late the night before.
