(we're all about bandwagons…)
Well, when I showed up for some ground study since my plane had been taken, I noticed that the plane was in the hangar. Turns out the prop governor quit working the flight before.
D. said he’d try to complete everything in one flight tomorrow evening. Provided that the plane is back in service by then (it should be) and no one takes the plane (at 6pm, I might get away with it, but who knows).
As I suspected, I’m not flying today. It seems they took the plane for someone’s check ride.
I’m going in to do some ground study instead.
I’m supposed to fly today at 2pm. The weather is beautiful, although slightly windy and gusty, which means the plane will probably go down for maintenance. I’ve still got the same two flights left. Plane was down for maintenance on Monday. There’s supposed to be two 172-RG’s, but the other one is down with bad gear actuators and has been for weeks. This means all training and all check rides happen in one plane, so I’ve been scheduled every other day, rather than every day. I guess since I’ve only got two flights left, and I’m leaving this weekend, it doesn’t really matter. If I can get signed off for the stage check and check ride before I leave and take them when I get back, all should be good. I’m seriously ready to be done with this program. I’ve been here over a year now, and that’s long enough. I’m starting to tire of Oklahoma as well– thinking that looking for a job elsewhere might not be a bad idea at all. Especially if this forces Joanna to do something else. I worry that if I work here, she’ll stay at the warehouse forever.
I’ve tinkered with the blog a bit. All pages have sidebars now, so maybe Sydney will feel better about the “stupid wasted margins” on the single-post pages. I tend to think a sidebar should be a constant thing, so it’s on all pages now. And it doesn’t change into half-a-sidebar when viewing the archives.
I also fixed the archives so they behave more reasonably, when you click on a month, you get the whole month on one page. It’s not like I’ve got so many people hitting it that the extra bandwidth makes any difference. I didn’t minding them being paged, but it didn’t work in a meaninfful way at all.
The archives are going further and further back. We figure this is as good a place as any to store all this stuff. There’s no good way to tell what’s been added, so if you actually want to read old stuff, you’ll just have to browse. We’re not adding in any chronological order, and Joanna’s unsure about the dates for many things.
I’ve been trying to write about movies I’ve watched lately. Mostly as much for myself as anyone, because movies are so often very transient with me. I don’t provide a lot of detail, for several reasons. One of them is that I like to know as little about a movie as possible before I watch it. The trouble is that if you don’t know ANYTHING about a movie, it’s terribly easy to walk into a horrible one. Even then, it’s only a wasted couple of hours. So, if you want to know about a movie, I’d suggest IMDB.
Lately, we’ve been watching stuff available from Blockbuster since Netflix annoyed me. I’m really going to exhaust the store before long and have to return to Netflix.
The last movie we watched was Bandits. I found it entertaining, and would put it near the top of the list of movies in it’s category. That category is “Comedic films with Bank Robbers as the protagonist.” Not as good as either Small Time Crooks or The Jade Scorpion, but that’s because I really like Woody Allen.
Before that, we watched Cannonball Run just because I felt like it. I don’t think there’s anything I need to say about it.
Scotland, PA is Macbeth set in a fast food joint. We liked it.
Now just for some older movies I like, but want to list in one place.
Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain is one the best movies ever.
Box of Moonlight gets points for being shot in East Tennessee, having John Turturro in addition to being an excellent all around movie. I recently watched it for the third time so that Joanna could see it too. She loved it as well.
Bodies Rest & Motion is lumped together in my mind with Kicking and Screaming because I saw them both on IFC, and they both feature Eric Stoltz. Kicking and Screaming is about the summer after you graduate from college and Bodies Rest & Motion has a similar feel.
The Tao of Steve is a wonderfully put together film about male/female relationships from a male point of view, though the movie as a whole is probably equally appealing to men and women. Joanna and I both really liked it.
Legend of 1900 takes place on a cruise ship, is totally non-offensive to anyone, and hard not to like.
My mother would like New Waterford Girl. It’s a nice twist on a common theme.
Runaway Train is seriously overrrated. Convicts, a girl, a runaway train, death. Woo…hoo. I think Joanna liked it.
Ghost World is probably Steve Buscemi’s best performance. I’ve seen it twice, Joanna and I both really liked it.
Y Tu Mama Tambien is delightful, though certainly not realistic. If you’re bothered by subtitles or sex, don’t watch it.
Okay, that’s probably enough for now.
I’ve got two more flights in a complex aircraft, then I’ll be signed off for a stage check and then a check ride. If all goes well, I should have my commercial license soon.
Joanna and I are going to Highlands, NC on Saturday for Joanna’s hard-earned vacation time. This is, of course, horrible timing for me, since I don’t think there’s any way I’ll manage to get a checkride in before I leave. That means that I’ll probably be rusty when they get around to my stage check, which could be bad.
