Jonah got the following e-mail today:

I edited the link to take out the evil bits. Amusing things to note: it *looks* like, if you’re not paying attention, that the link is on nachzen.net, and it pretended to come from an administrator account on my server. In fact, for the first half-second I read it, I thought, “huh, what useful daemon sent an e-mail to my users?” before I realized it was malicious. This is a reasonably well-designed attack. I downloaded the file and let the internets analyze it for me. Here’s the report.

Fortunately, since there are no Windows computers here, this would have been harmless even if Jonah had clicked on it, but paying attention is still a good thing.

So Berck came across this article on the Internet about how to make your own bacon.  The first step is procuring some pork belly.  He asked at Whole Foods, and they suggested he try Andy’s Meat Market.

$22.13 later, we had ourselves some pork belly.  Here’s Berck wiping it off with paper towels.

Here he is adding a mixture of salt, sugar, and pink salt (sodium nitrite).

Then it goes in a plastic 2 gallon “Ziploc.”  Berck had to make a special trip to King Soopers to get some.

Next he mixed up the spices.

Chopped some garlic…

Added some brown sugar, a crumbled bay leaf, some thyme, and red pepper and then smeared it all on.

Now it sits in the fridge for a week.

So, now streaking at your high school football game is a sex crime. Which means that you can be forced to register as a sex offender, and no longer live anywhere except, perhaps, under a bridge, or in a make-shift camp out in the woods (but not for long). It turns out, you can’t even go to church. How many kids do we have to charge as sex offenders in order to save our kids from themselves? Or how about how many innocent people do we have to kill before we realize that our justice system isn’t good enough to be trusted with killing people? You crazy conservative Christian freaks, are you proud of the mess you’ve created? Is this what you wanted? This is the age of reason and compassion in the best of the modern, developed world? Really, this is the best we can do?
