Green Hair

My hair is green.
It’s not usually green, of course. It’s just sprayed green now for my part of Emerald City Denizen #1 in my school’s production of _The Wizard of Oz_. The director told me, “I’d dare you to go to school like that, but I know you would!”
I did, actually. Yesterday, I went straight from the performance to school, having removed only my costume and makeup (and redonning my street clothes, of course). Dr. Garner, the straight-laced dean of humanities or something like that, looked up, caught sight of me and my emerald noggin as I entered the professor office area, and demanded, “Can I help you?” No, I justneeded to drop something off. As I left, I heard her ask Dr. Allums, my English professor, a question and him answering, “…she’s in the Wizard of Oz…”
Today, the person fooling with my hair put it into Princess Leah buns. So I have greenbubbles on the sides of my head. It looks really stupid out of costume. But that hasn’t stopped me from going places like that.
It’s been green for three days now. One more to go, and then I can have normal, nice, brown hair again.

Sick

augh. Sick… I’ve been up for about half an hour or so. Took a shower
and got on here. Now I think I’ll go back to bed.

Last night was bad. I finally got up and emptied the contents of my
stomach around 4. There was a lot there from 8 the night before, which
my mom took to mean a stomach virus. I’m pretty sure it’s the flu.
Coldy with headache and vomiting. I dozed in the easy chair downstairs,
threw up again an hour later. Then when everyone else got up, I was
banished to my room. Mom changed my sheets and piled up a bunch of
pillows on my bed. Dry heaves sent me to the bathroom again. I napped a
lot all day, calling the school to leave notes for my professors that I
was sick. I called the theater dept since we had rehearsal today. Tracy
answered the phone. I told her I was sick. She burst out laughing and
then Elizabeth took the phone from her. “What? You’re sick? Ha ha!”
She laughed too and said, “Now you know how i feel. You deserve it.”
Then she said she was sorry I was sick before accidentally hanging up on me.

I called back, and Stephen answered the phone. He asked if perhaps it
was God punishing me. I said I thought about it, but if that were the
case, I should be sick all the time.

Becky Lindquist called later to see if I wanted the last ticket to Joseph
and the Amazing Color Dreamcoat. I did. I’ll go with the theater majors
and minors on Thurs, skipping my sculpture class YET AGAIN. Oh well. I
just have to have the horse done by the 11th.

You’ve got mail

Hmm.. Mom woke me up. She told me to stay off the line for an
hour. I dunno why. They were eating supper downstairs. But
I kept getting knocked off or someone would pick up the phone
no matter where I logged onto. Mom would yell upstairs,
“Joanna! I need the phone!” Or she wanted to do a
flashsession on AOL or something.

Everyone gets jealous of me. I have e-mail waiting whenever I
log on. To just about anywhere. The AOL thing blasts out
“You’ve got mail!” everytime I check. I tried to lower the
volume, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. I tried removing
the sound, but Steph said, “No! Don’t do that; I like it when
it says I have mail.” So now it still blasts it out at full
volume. And everyone gets mad at me because I have mail and
they don’t. Heh.

I’ve been sleeping all day. Which proves I’m sick, I
suppose. Denise came up and said, “I heard you went to be
like at 9:30 last night. That’s like a record!”

Clique

Last night I was sitting on one of the beds in the hotel I was in with three
other chicks flipping through the channels on the TV when I saw Clinton
speaking. I stopped it on CNN Headline News as all three girls started
yelling at Clinton so I couldn’t hear where he was speaking. I wondered if
that was the Longview stop. Then they switched to a commercial, so I went on
to Dukes of Hazard. That was one of my favorite shows growing up. I never
knew that it was slamming white trash. It was just about my part of the
country. The South. I used to have a great southern accent. There’s
probably still a couple of tapes lying around with me talking as a kid. I
loved making tapes. I thought I was terribly funny.

Well, for the past 24 hours, I was part of a clique. It was great. The four
of us were obnoxious, loud, silly, and exclusive. And I loved it.

Cris Hyatt, Robyn, and this girl named Amber and I drove down to Gulf Shores
in Robyn’s car. Robyn had her CD player stolen a couple weeks ago, so we had
to listen to the radio. To give you an idea of what kind of music Robyn
likes, whenever a song came on that I liked, she’d turn the station. We
listened to mostly dance pop stuff. Lots of 80’s music, which is the music
i’m least familiar with. So as everyone else sang along with the words, I’d
dance with the upper half of my body. Cris, who is the master of
interpretive dance, did as well, and Amber, who just likes to have fun,
alternated between dancing in the front seat and laughing. Robyn kept her
hands on the steering wheel… most of the time. It was great, four girls
cutting up in a midsize, as everyone who passed us stared and laughed. When
YMCA came on, the whole car bounced down the mainstreet of Foley as we did
our best to form the letters without punching the roof of the car out.

We didn’t stop acting crazy when we got there. It rained almost the whole
time, but we went out on the beach anyway. I got my jeans legs wet (they’re
still damp) when we waded in the surf. The hotel was really nice. The
seminar part was fairly short (and ineffective, we decided), but that left
more time to sit away from everyone else and a make a lot of noise. Heck,
we’re seniors. We can do whatever the hell we please. For some reason we
started substituting Cris’ name for any obscenity we wanted to use. “Well,
Cris you!” All the new senators and representatives seemed to be freshmen,
and they didn’t have a clue what to do. And we seniors are supposed to be
examples. Ha! “Cris the system.”

At one point the speaker had us to divide into 8 groups of 4 and come up with
a definition of leadership, an expectation of the weekend, and something we
didn’t expect to achieve. My group used big words in their definitions.
Cris kept sneering over at me from her group saying, “Those are your words,
aren’t they?” For what we didn’t think we’d achieve, we put, “Get a tan.”

I went up and talked to the guest speaker a couple of times, even though he
kept slamming us, in a veiled manner, for being obnoxious. He was funny, in
a very dry way, and use lots of overheads. But I don’t think I learned
anything. Oh well. That part of the “three years of your life you’ll spend
in meetings called by someone other than yourself.” And I had fun at school
expense.

I love having a cat. He came up to see me as soon as I walked in the door.
And he’s wanted me to hold him ever since.

Everyone is gone except for Dad and Mamama. Dad is finally working on my
closet. Instead of having a hole there, it’s totally gone. I mean, you open
the sliding doors, and it goes straight into the attic. I’m not sure where I
should sleep. Maybe I should move into the dormer room.

My grandfather is going to lose his hair with this latest round of chemo.
He’s always had a full head of beautiful, white hair as long as i can
remember. He evidently wants me to take him out to get a good baseball cap.
Although I think he’d look cool in a fedora. I ought to get him one of
those cool baseball caps to wear backwards. Heck, yeah.

Hmm.. You know, I don’t really care about anything anymore. But for some
reason, you keep popping up.

I have an English paper due on Monday. I think I know what I’ll write about
too. I love it when I have an idea. I hate sitting at a blank screen with
nothing to say but having a deadline to say it in.

Oh, dad just invited Mark over to stay in the dormer room tonight. Guess
that means I won’t be in there.

Means I’ll probably be up late talking to him too.

Workstudy Permit

Stephen made a point about no true altruism existing in the world last
night in the B&N parking lot. I pulled my wallet out of my back pocket
and pulled out a dollar bill and handed it to him. Neither he nor Karen
would take it, but Cris Hyatt did. Then she tried to give it back to me,
but I wouldn’t take it.

I’m entirely too generous. I leave large tips wherever I go. Last night
my bill for my tea and the cheese fries I split with Hyatt was $4
something, but I left a two dollar tip. I guess I’m trying to make up
for giving the waitresses a hard time. Flame was complaining about being
out of coffee, so Maynard said we’d say something about it. At that
point I yelled rather loudly, “More coffee!” “I thought we’d wait till
she came BACK,” said Maynard, “But oh well.”

I’m up at the computer lab at school, BTW. I carefully read the new
signs tacked up about how EVERYONE using the lab has to sign in and then
went straight back to the room with the internet connection without
signing anything. The work studies at the front desk never tell anyone
to sign in unless they want to give them a hard time. And I’m a senior.
I’m invincible. Most of the work studies are little freshmen and
sophomores who haven’t learned that they can make a pile more money
elsewhere than the lab.

I get asked if I’m a workstudy up here in the lab, which is hilarious,
since I know very little about IBMs. I actually know a heck of a lot
more than I did when I started hanging around the lab (like how to
restart the computer, although that doesn’t take much knowledge, just
confidence that you won’t get into trouble doing it). I was talking to
Hedge in the lab on Tuesday, and a chick in there asked me, “Are you a
workstudy?” “No,” I replied, “But I play one on TV.” Hedge started
laughing at the thought of me being a workstudy, and then it took some
convincing that i WASN’T one. “You aren’t Hilda?” asked the girl.
Funny, Nathan called me Hildegard once. In the lab, I think.

I feel like a Josta, but I’ve got an hour car ride to the gulf shores in
a few minutes. I’m riding with Hyatt and Robyn and probably someone
else. Cris said last night, “You know, you have to go to the spring
banquet.” That set me off glumly saying, “I have to go to the spring
banquet,” all night. Till Karen called us bizarre.

Cris suggested we resign as SGA officers and leave Robyn (the secretary
of the senior class) to plan the spring banquet herself. I thought that
was incredibly humorous. Stephen called me a worthless human being for
saying I was going to be doing homework instead of going to the spring
banquet with the guy who asked me my freshman year.

Well, I best make my way over to the dorms. I may go out with Hedge and
company when I get back on Sat. They’re going to this Thai restaurant, I
think. I’ve never really had the Indian food experience.

Don’t get caught between the disgruntled letter carrier and the press.
